Anqi Gu is an artist, community organizer, art educator, and spiritual practitioner.
Gu is from Suzhou, China and lives in Brooklyn, USA. She is pursuing a MFA degree at School of Visual Arts. Her latest work is linked to her spiritual cognition, specifically the activation of Qi-Xue (energy flow) throughout her body probed by the subtle needling during acupuncture sessions. Gu uses acupuncture as a guide to connect the body and the cosmo. Flesh and spirit, tangible and intangible, she presents her findings in the form of installation art.
Gu has been an active member in many communities, some of which she organized herself. In 2018, along with a few fellow sculpture students at RISD, Gu co-founded the art community "Trigger Art", and managed its official WeChat account. Trigger Art provided opportunities for students to connect with Chinese artists through video conferences. It quickly proved itself to be fertile ground for discourse surrounding contemporary Chinese art. Many working artists and curators collaborated with Trigger Art and had their lecture published through the official account. Besides the virtual events, Trigger Art also organized popular in-person critiques between Chinese-speaking students across several North American art schools, alongside guest critics and curators.
In 2021, haunted by the coldness and alienation coming out of the pandemic. Gu and collaborator Yuheng He sensed the need for community and began to hold healing tea parties in the living room of Gu's apartment. Together the group would read poetry, share works of art, meditate, and discuss life and philosophy. Out of those meetings "The Decameron" was born, a Chinese humanistic community based in Providence, Rhode Island. They later collaborated with other local communities, including the RISD Museum, "Plot" Regenerative Farm, Brown University, and the 706 Community etc.
Since 2022, Gu has been a participant in the project "AcrossRye Art Education", which brings artists to children living in the mountainous region of Baoshan, Yunnan for a summer arts program. Attracted by the aspects of heritage protection and children's art education, Gu promoted the project and carried out fundraisers in the US. In the summer of 2023, she flew to Baoshan where she taught children art through play, visited families, and engaged in social-ecological research. Currently, Gu is still actively involved in the project's fundraising, research, and development.
As the cornerstone of Gu's life and work, she firmly believes in the linkage between cosmic energy and human life. She studied humanistic astrology, participated in events organized by Buddhist centers, danced West African dances and other freeform, power-affirming dances. Gu has also taken an interest in the philosophy of traditional Chinese medicine, such as the "Five Circuits and Six Qi" and the "Five Elements Acupuncture".
Gu holds two degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design. She received her BFA in sculpture in 2021, and her MA in Master of Teaching Learning in Arts and Design the following year. She is expected to complete her MFA from the School of Visual Arts by 2025. While in school, Gu received a scholarship from RISD, as well as the graduate department of fine arts at SVA. During her time in Providence, Gu took courses from the Department of East Asian Studies, Theater Performance, Comparative Literature, and Contemplative Studies at Brown University.
